early hours...

its always best to get up early, right? it has been a 4am start to the day, with titanium on the menu, its not that I need to, I want to get up and do this. Get'er done is the motto, catch up on long overdue stuff and take on new stuff, gotta pay rent, gotta eat...
on a side note, recommend a respirator when using a beartex wheel, unless you like coating your lungs with the stuff...

titanium singlespeed with a lefty? get your Titanium lefty head tube here!

sounds like a porn name if you ask me. Salt Lake local Greg Steele ordered this rig for an upcoming event, and as usual I am powering forward at full speed to knock it out. Today will see some metal actually get stuck together.
The real ass kicker is the head tube, the spec requires me to use essentially a pipe to achieve the proper size. I am not looking forward to turning this thing to size, as it will not only take time, but more importantly a shit ton of the VERY expensive material will hit the floor in the process.
Its 6am, time to get to the shop.
I will have extra head tubes, so if you need one for a Canondale lefty in ti please call, and thanks to the crew at Form cycles for the hookup, will send you that dropout next week when the dust settles.

singlespeed time trial park city, july 28th at 6pm (2011)

okay, so since google crawls blogs so well its time to make sure this post gets found. The park city singlespeed society will be hosting the first annual, and one of many to come, underground races next week! go to the website to sign up as the slots will be limited.
Bring your sense of humor, leave your lycra at home, and bring your bike. Singlespeeds only, but I will lock out your derailleurs for the event (a harmless and reverseable function) for free, so you can get the experience. Be ready for a suprise event midway on the course.
Entry fee is free, but we'll be passing the bucket to take donations to go to the moutain trails foundation, so grab your spare change or put aside a few bucks for a good cause!
So come on out, the awards party will be right after the event at the High West Saloon in old town Park City, conveniently located just down the street from the finish line.

buy livewrong tee shirt here!

so its time, shirts are done and ready to go!
Shirts come in medium and large, black with white print, and are 20 bucks each; a small price to pay for the joy of letting folks know where you stand. I have had mine from the original batch sold back in '04 and have offended and made folks laugh all over the world.

Better hurry, they won't last long.

resale value...

A recent customer spent a few days, well perhaps a week..driving me up a wall about buying a bike from me. The most interesting part was how he told me that he could buy a BH road bike from a friend with a 'connection' at a much smaller price; clearly in an attempt to get me to lower mine. It was a great tactic, although a bit cliche.
The real kicker was when he asked about 'resale value', more to the point was if the bike would gain value in time. Holy shit, is this a house? have my bikes gone on a publicly traded market that dips and rises in value based on the amount of money the fed is willing to back for lending to buy them? am I charging too little?
Gimme a break. These are bicycles, metal things cut and welded (or glued) together to make something fun that can provide an escape from the realities of life. Do the guys that wear full lycra team kits out there actually think they are riding professionally? no, of course not, but they are escaping life for a bit and that is awesome!
The guy bought the bike (pic above), and busted my balls for a free computer and water bottle and anything else I could offer him, and I took care of him, because hopefully after all the sales bullshit is over, that person will be out riding and suddenly realize how much fun riding is.

ski lift chair swing for the yard from park city resort!

so the weekend was sort of a blur, with nights ending around 10:30-11pm and starting around 7:30, ugh. I had two ski chairs from park city mountain resort that needed custom swing frames made for them so they could be set up at their new owner's home.
Unlike some folks who do this, I wanted a set up that could be broken down for storage or at the very least be easy to move around.
The top of the thing detaches from the legs and the chair can be unhooked from the chain, pretty sweet.
I spent more damn time grinding off the remaining weldement from the original main support arm that ties the chair to the lift cable, impressive structure and it makes me quite confident in chairlift strength for sure! Oddly enough, there were no drain holes though, which seems odd since it prevents the water from draining out over time.
Anyhow, if you or someone you know needs one give me a shout, 400 bucks is the price (for the rig, chair not included, you are on your own with that one...things are like gold around here).
shit, hope I left the alarm on!

park city drunk crit, any bike can enter!!!!

so just realized that some folks were wondering if they could attend the event without a singlespeed, the answer is yes!! the event is open to any bike, the least appropriate bike the better!!! remember, we will be making one award for the coolest thing..whatever that is.
Todd and Jen braved the heat to get the course worked up yesterday, rest assured they did an awesome job! thanks guys!
so come call in to sign up, its a private event so entry is limited and you must be 21 to enter. We will do a kids version as well (obviously no beer) so don't burn up good money on a baby sitter.
here is todd rigging up the drag for the four wheeler to lay out the course with

seriously, what the hell is sleep?!

so its another early  morning and I am dragging to get my arse to work after another 14 hour day yesterday.  I thought about actually writing a list of what I do everyday to understand why I am so worn down sometimes. Yesterday included driving to west valley and salt lake to pick up materials (80 feet of schedule 40 pipe), then off to shop for meet ups with customers, build up some wheels, then build up the bike they are going on, meet with consultant for new carbon project, then work on ski lift chair swings that have been sitting on the to do list for weeks now. ugh. poor me eh? ha ha.
On a side note, what the hell is wrong with the world when I have to file for a permit 6 weeks in advance to have 30 friends meet for a private ride on park city mountain resort property? what should have been just a simple thing turned into some kind of multi layered process that was given a poor likliehood of approval, but still requiring a proposal. Shit, give me a break folks. I think some people just want to be a stick in the mud. The time trial is still on, but rest assured not anywhere close to park city mountain resort.
New stuff to come, but here is a shot of Brad D's new titanium full suspension bike, super sweet! Hopefully Brad feels the same way!
Go ride, and don't forget to come to the drunk crit next week, which is approximately 8 miles northest of the property lines of park city mountain resort.

drunk crit coming soon, are you signed up?

well we are about a week away, and today jen and I made the trophies for the drunk crit and for the time trial. The crit is by invite, so you gotta rsvp, dont' want some crazy riff raff rolling in and messing up the joint!
The time trial is set for the 28th, at 6pm, five miles of awesome riding with a party at the end....who could not get on that.
The time trial is singlespeed only, but show up with your geared bike and I will lock out your derailleurs for you so you can still join in the fun!
Call the shop or email to sign up!
Still making bikes in the mix, finsihing up a ti full suspension for Brad, a ti road for John, and a few others as well...sleep, what the hell is that?

livewrong shirts...

okay, so enough folks have asked me where I got mine, and given that the douchebag is now getting into hot water with doping alegations, its time to get off my arse and offer these things, under threat of copywrite infringement from some assclown who ''owns'' the name and from the lance foundation...but do you think I care...(rhetorical)
SO- get yer order in for livewrong tees now! black with white printing across the chest, 20 bucks each on full cotton.
Email or call for info..

stans fluid

yo, just a quick reminder on tire sealant for you tubeless folks....
1) use a compressor and over inflate slightly
2) use soapy water to help seat the bead, but not too much, just enough to help the tire slide into place
3) WEAR SAFETY GLASSES, or at least some cool sunglasses, because the shit will get into your eyes if it hops the bead, and it stings.
Also, more for shops than for home mechanics, wipe up the spillage if you are just too darn shaky to put it in correctly, nothing more lame than a nice wheel with what looks like dried barf on the rim..
yay.

park city single speed society

so its official, well in a 'from the hip format', edwin cycles has its own ride group for the singlespeeders in town! unlike some groups rides, we will have some events that will be posted here on the blog as well as the facebook page, to include our drunk dirt crit and a time trial for the month of june.
Drunk Dirt Crit is set for July 16th at 6PM right here at the shop (well, across the street). It is cyclocross format and you better bring a helmet or we will loan you one and you won't like it.
Entry fee is a donation of your choice which will go to our good buds at the mountain trails foundation, so ante up!
Call the shop for info and make sure to visit the group facebook page from the edwin cycles facebook page, and forgive me for all the techno geek drivel!!!

orange you glad you got a bike?

ha ha, sweet. I hope that the person who is getting this bike likes it! it looks fun and is super easy to spot. This bike is the first one to use the 'kinked' downtube set up for crown clearance, like the way it came together.
I had to 'freestyle' the layout, as picking up the joint location via my computer program was too time consuming given I had to recreate the tube in the drawing first, so I did it the old fashioned way! yay me.
Working on some new stuff, the seat stay crowns and mating dropouts feature radiused cuts for the bullets that will tension weld into the seat and chainstays, can you say invisible joint? fully plan to sell these to other builders looking for a leg up on the asian onslaught (is that spelled right?) ''designed in the usa''.
Also have some other fixtures to appear, backpurgeble chaistay fixture is on the short horizon.
Finally catching up on orders too, some patient folks out there, and some not so patient ones...but all are squared away now. From now on I am not in the custom frame business, doing stock only for the next few months.
Lastly, was witness to how shitty customer service can be. A shop owner, local, who sold an incredibly overpriced set of road brakes to a friend of mine, declined to help him with installation and even went so far as to claim the brakes were 'white anodized'. Holy shit, well don't worry mr. ''shop owner'' I fixed your mess and would like to point out that there is no such thing as white anodize per se, unless it came out of a rattle can (clearly the case as the paint was flaking off just from handling the things).
In a more happy note, as I cannot leave you with some depressing drivel, we are forming a single speed society here in park city that will feature secret events and all the coolness and irreverence you can handle. Stay tuned! first event is coming soon!
